CONTI POLYROPE Finally Approved for Compact Diverting Pulleys
Flat-backside variants of elevator belts can now be used with diverting and tensioning pulleys from 85 mm in diameter.
We believe this article brings news that may lift some of you out of your seats – especially those of you who design passenger or freight elevators. The latest approval for CONTI POLYROPE elevator belts is likely to raise more than a few eyebrows.
100 → 85 mm. Finally!
Based on an official declaration by the internationally recognized certification authority Liftinstituut in Amsterdam, flat-backside variants of CONTI POLYROPE elevator belts can now be used with diverting and tensioning pulleys from 85 mm in diameter. This means they can now match the same diameter as the traction pulley.
This will be formally incorporated into an update of the type certificate confirming compliance with ISO 8100 requirements, no later than its expiration in February 2027.

We hold all currently available POLYROPE types in stock and offer them by the meter, ready to order online.
The approval applies exclusively to the flat-backside variant. The double-profile DP variant continues to require a minimum diverting pulley diameter of 100 mm.
Why Does This Matter?
- Smaller pulley diameter = smaller bearings and shafts
- More compact assembly = reduced installation space
- More flexibility in elevator design
- No compromises in performance or safety – certification remains fully valid
CONTI POLYROPE
POLYROPE are flat elevator belts by ContiTech, certified for use in passenger and freight elevators in accordance with EN 81-20:2020 and EN 81-50:2020. They represent a proven solution for modern elevators, replacing traditional steel ropes.
All POLYROPE types have always required a minimum traction pulley diameter of 85 mm, while the minimum diverting pulley diameter was 100 mm. This was precisely the limitation elevator designers faced when trying to reduce the installation footprint of their drive systems.
The ContiTech development team, working in collaboration with Liftinstituut, is now changing that.
Types and parameters of CONTI POLYROPE elevator belts
| Type | Construction | Breaking Load | Traction Pulley – Minimum ø | Diverting Pulley – Updated Minimum ø |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| F25 | 25-6×2.0 | 30 kN | 85 mm | 85 mm |
| F25 DP | 25-6×2.0 | 30 kN | 85 mm | 100 mm |
| F33 | 33-8×2.0 | 40 kN | 85 mm | 85 mm |
| F33 DP | 33-8×2.0 | 40 kN | 85 mm | 100 mm |
| F50 | 50-12×2.0 | 60 kN | 85 mm | 85 mm |
| F50 DP | 50-12×2.0 | 60 kN | 85 mm | 100 mm |
Each belt consists of 6, 8, or 12 steel tension cords encased in a black polyurethane jacket. The minimum nominal breaking load is 30 kN (6 cords), 40 kN (8 cords), and 60 kN (12 cords) respectively.
Perhaps surprisingly, POLYROPE belts contain more steel wires than conventional steel ropes. Test results show their service life can be up to three times longer.
Even after several million cycles, the strength characteristics show only a negligible decline.
