Berges BECKER Asymmetric Pulleys with Variable-Speed Adjustment
Berges asymmetric variable-speed pulleys with continuous speed change – BECKER system – are used to continuously change the speed using a V-belt or variator – wide V-belt. It is made of aluminum alloy.
These are special pulleys that allow adjustment of the pulley width and thus the position of the belt. The result is a transmission with a smooth change of speed and gear ratio without the need to stop the transmission. Controlling the width of the drive pulley, or speed changes, can be mechanical, hydraulic or electronic.
The BECKER system is a special asymmetric version of the variable-speed pulley, where each side of the belt has a different pitch angle. One side of the variator has an angle of inclination of 3 degrees and the other side of 17 degrees. This asymmetric design enables better distribution of forces, less stress on the shaft and bearings, greater rigidity and longer service life.
Pulley Construction

Typical Applications
Berges BECKER asymmetric variable-speed pulleys are intended for applications, where power transmission is achieved by a special asymmetric variator belt. Power of up to 150 kW can be transmitted using variator transmissions.
They are typically used in machines where the change of speed is provided mechanically, especially in presses, single-purpose machines, agricultural machines and other applications.
Properties
- Higher lateral stiffness
- Reduction of centrifugal forces
- Lower operating temperature of the belt
- Higher load capacity and longer V-belt life
- Easier pulley installation and alignment
Materials
Aluminum alloy.

Pulley Manufacturer Profile
The mechanical engineering company Berges, based in Marienheide, Westphalia, has focused on products for mechanical variable-speed drives since the 1940s. In addition to its main production site, the company operates a subsidiary in South Tyrol, Italy. In 2003, it acquired Becker Antriebe GmbH and gained the BECKER asymmetric variable-speed drive technology.
Today, BERGES ANTRIEBSTECHNIK GmbH & Co. KG is a leading global manufacturer of variable-speed pulleys. Its portfolio also includes control systems and accessories for variators, complete variable-speed gear units, and friction wheels.
We are an authorized distributor of variable-speed pulleys from the German company BERGES ANTRIEBSTECHNIK GmbH & Co. KG.
