When the Belt Snaps – a Story from the Neighborhood
One of our colleagues recently encountered a typical early summer problem. His neighbor’s automatic pool cleaner, bought from a DIY garden store, suddenly stopped working. The reason? A broken drive belt.
If…
If our colleague weren’t from the industry, the story would likely have continued with a replacement belt bought from the same DIY store – or perhaps from a specialized pool cleaner e-shop. The new belt alone would have cost his neighbor nearly €24. But the second belt, already worn, would have remained unchanged – and based on experience, it wouldn’t have lasted much longer. The whole process would have to be repeated.
Total cost: approx. €48 and an unreasonable amount of time.
Our Story Took a Different Turn
Our colleague correctly identified the belt and considered the specifics of the application – regular rubber or plastic belts are not suitable for use in pool water. An appropriate solution is a special polyurethane timing belt with an aramid tension member.
In this case, he chose BANCOLLAN belts made by the Japanese manufacturer Bando. Naturally, he replaced both belts as a pair. The repair went smoothly, and the pool cleaner is back in full working order.
And the cost? His neighbor paid just under €9 including VAT for the complete set from the TYMA CZ Eshop.
A happy ending to our story!
Let’s Take a More Technical Look at the Situation
The cleaning brushes of a robotic pool cleaner are driven by an electric motor through a drive shaft and a set of two timing belts. The transmission is not enclosed and remains in constant contact with pool water during operation. This water typically contains pool chemicals, chlorine, and salt.
In such demanding conditions, rubber belts with fiberglass tension members are not suitable – fiberglass absorbs water, swells, and loses strength. Common plastic belts are no better, as their steel cords corrode very quickly. That’s why special polyurethane timing belts with aramid tension members are used for these applications.
Bando BANCOLLAN belt construction suitable for robotic pool cleaner drives:
- Polyurethane backing
- Aramid tension member
- Polyurethane teeth
Bando BANCOLLAN
Bando BANCOLLAN belts are a perfect fit for this application. The drive runs at low speed, so a standard inch-based XL profile with 84 teeth is more than sufficient. Their high flexibility also makes them ideal for small pulley diameters.
When selecting a belt, make sure to check the correct material code in the product name. Polyurethane belts with aramid tension members are marked with the UK suffix – based on the manufacturer’s designation: U = polyurethane, K = aramid.

Replacing the Belts Is Easy
Simply remove the side cover of the cleaner, clear out any remnants of the old belts, fit the new ones, loop them over the tensioning pulley, and reassemble the cleaner.
We strongly recommend replacing both belts as a set – even if only one is damaged. This ensures optimal and long-term performance of the entire system.
Why Wait for Expensive Original Spare Parts?
Original belts from pool cleaner manufacturers are often several times more expensive. In many cases, they also need to be ordered from abroad. Prices in DIY stores tend to be even higher.
Thanks to accurate profile identification and a solid technical solution, we offer a fully compatible alternative at a fraction of the cost – with no compromises in durability or performance.
